Goal
Our primary goal for the U5 age category is to introduce the basics of soccer.
In this league coaches will be teaching kids not to pick up the ball or touch it with their hands. They will be learning the basic rules of soccer. Passing, kicking, scoring on a net, dribbling the ball.
Coaches at their own discretion can add more things to their practices if they would like to make it a bit more challenging.
Practice time and game time will be a total of 45 minutes long. Practice anywhere between 25-30 minutes long and then have a mini game where coaches are on the field assisting the players. This can be anywhere between 15-25 minutes long.
Each team will practice on a quarter of a field and have a pop up net. When it's game time the two teams are able to play on half of the field.
Children must have shin guards to play soccer, shin guards must be covered. Cleats at this age are not necessary but recommended.
Structure & Rules
- 45 Minute long sessions
- Roughly a 20-minute practice, 3-minute break, 20-minute game (10-minute halves with 2-minute intermission). Water breaks as required
- The teams will be playing on makeshift fields that cover touchline to touchline in one half of a U11 field (at St. Pat’s East). Each team will have a pop up net that they can place on the ends of the field. Coaches can determine how long and wide they would like their field. By the end of the season, they should be going from touchline-to-touchline.
- One coach from every team can be on the field helping guide the kids. The other coaches will sit with their teams and help with subs.
- Coaches can have 4 players on and 1 goalie. Have coaches find a system that works for them and the other coaches if they’d like to do it differently
- At this age we are teaching the kids:
- Not to touch the ball with their hand(s)
- Running and kicking at the same time
- Passing
- Shooting
- Towards the end of the season you can work at throw-ins if you feel the kids are ready
- Rules of the mini games:
- If a handball occurs the other team gets possession
- After a team scores, they must back up to half and wait for the team to approach them before they can score
- If the ball goes out of bounds the coach can throw in the ball; later on in the season you can teach your kids how to do a throw-in
- Subs are at the coaches discretion in how long they want each line to play for.
- You need to keep it fair and be smart about how long kids are playing for
- No body contact at all
- Coaches are to use their own discretion for most of the season. Any issues with another coach or parent, we ask that the 24-hour rule is followed and then make contact.
Our goal for Taber Soccer is to grow. We want the players, the coaches, and our own board to grow. We believe that getting youth out to play soccer with different kids from the community is very beneficial for youth in all aspects of their health and development. We hope to continue to have our program grow and succeed as the years continue on.
